GATE

At Santa Margarita, we pride ourselves in meeting the needs of our Gifted and Talented Students in the least obtrusive manner. Our teachers differentiate the curriculum to meet the needs of each student.  Teachers use a variety of measures to ensure that our students are challenged including, but not limited to, Cognitively Guided Instruction in Mathematics, extension menus, advanced lesson designs, and tiered instruction.  We expose our students to the behaviors of scholars and encourage them to approach lessons through a balance of acceleration, novelty, depth, and complexity.

In addition to making every effort to meet the needs of the students within the regular classroom setting, we also offer other opportunities throughout the year.  In the past we have offered Engineering, Socratic Seminar, Art, and Web Quest: Computer-based Investigation.

We use the district’s innovative portfolio process to identify or GATE students.  A collection of work samples and anecdotes are accumulated to show a child’s potential in any and all areas of giftedness.  Students can be identified for exceptionally high academic achievement, intellectual ability, and fine/performing arts.  Portfolios are then presented to the Site GATE Screening Committee and if approved, students are identified as GATE.  In order to help us find possible potential candidates, we administer the Nagglieri test once each year.
